Call me a freelance scriptwriter for hirE…
Names for what I do include playwright, screenwriter, speechwriter, conceptual creative, coach and producer. That only covers about half them. Above all, I tell stories and I help people tell theirs.
I love two things, experimenting and making excellent work. I’ve been actively creating work for nearly quarter of a century.
My journey originating projects as a writer and performer has led to commissions for Sky Comedy, Birmingham Rep Theatre, Audible, Oxford Playhouse, and more. Projects I’ve written have been featured in The Guardian and Sunday Times Culture, and other national publications. I’ve achieved recognition in the form of winning the BAFTA Rocliffe forum and being a finalist for the Mercury Weinberger Playwriting Prize and Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Best Play.
I’ve expanded my portfolio to provide creative storytelling solutions for international creative agencies, production houses, groundbreaking brands and world-saving causes. As a conceptual creative, speechwriter, and scriptwriter, I’ve now delivered creative solutions for 15+ years, from the irreverent to the gut-punchingly direct. As a creative producer, I shape projects from concept to delivery, scaling bespoke collaborations to meet their needs.
Story is everything, and we can choose how to tell it.
It starts from the words we choose, the structure we use, and the visuals and experiences they infuse. I created this studio to support unique projects and scale according to their creative needs. I draw on a wide-ranging expertise and call on collaborators where needed.
My origin story
I’ve had an eye for design since I used to hide in my secondary school art class during P.E. because I hated football. It was Stoke on Trent in the 90s, having an eye for a tonal drawing wasn’t a huge win. Not exactly a difficult leap to hear I found the performing arts either, is it?
I moved to London at sixteen to study at The BRIT School then won a scholarship to Guildford School of Acting where I discovered I could be a writer (no offence to Stoke by the way, I am very fond of it… now). After that, I honed my skills through invited writers programmes at Royal Court, Soho, Bush, and Arcola. Later mastering long-form improv comedy as a house player at The Free Association in London. In hustling to promote my work, I mastered digital and social media, eventually realising I could offer writing services professionally.
Why I do what I do
I love to pursue the possibilities of creative novelty. I have a curiosity for new ways to tell stories, I’m a shapeshifter and a perfectionist. I geek out on the detail of how things look and feel. Almost as soon as I was officially out of education my earliest creative enterprise was founding and running a collaborative arts collective, pairing artists of different mediums to make something they’d never considered before. I realised there that’s what I love: making one of a kind things and watching creativity win over every time. Creativity is by its nature about connection. It has to be collaborative to thrive, and that has shaped how I work ever since.
In my original projects
I often explore the working class and LGBTQ+ experience. Themes I return to include mental illness, addiction, and trauma. I like to research political challenges that make me angry or philosophical topics that make my mind boggle and then try and ground them in human realities. Alongside writing, I perform, including long-form improvised comedy and solo performance. I also make music and visual art, which enrich my work with a unique perspective.
As creative producer and partner
In my collaborative projects, I’m interested in work that’s trying to do right by our world and do it in an entertaining way, in partners that want to move beyond parameters of medium and make singularly excellent work, and I’m driven by a desire to connect and make people laugh and feel. If you have an unusual or intriguing project and you’re not sure how to make it happen, then there’s a good chance I’ll have some ideas as to how to get you there. Let’s find a way to work together.
