Tree Shall Not Be Moved
Birmingham Rep Theatre x Sky Comedy
Synopsis
Thirteen-year-old Gideon is determined to save his favourite tree from the chop. He’s enlisted his Grandad and mum to help, but they don’t see eye to eye these days. As the chainsaws close in, can this divided family maintain a united front? A short comedy play about trees, trauma, and traditional British desserts.
What is Sky Comedy Rep?
I was selected from hundreds of applicants to be a writer on a development scheme with Sky Comedy and Birmingham Rep. It was created to find new generation writers of comedic plays. And it culminated in a performance of my short play “Tree Shall Not Be Moved”.
A little more from me…
I was so excited about my application for this scheme. I am from Stoke on Trent, so Birmingham feels almost local. I started out writing, so that feels very natural. I also love comedy, so it felt like a lot of fun to be tasked to write a short comedy play. All my favourite things. The result was a story about growing up in a family recovering from addiction trying to do their best to have the courage to change the things they can. It asks what power working-class people have over their environment.
